Buttons

There was a time when this blog was about knitting. There was a time, too, when I was actually doing more than a couple of rows of knitting a month. That time is no more. Now? Now we have buttons:

Buttons until the end of eternity (or the end of this evening, whichever comes first).

I am a decent seamstress, but I like to cut corners because I get impatient. While I have been known to re-make a pattern 8 times until the garment in question fits me right, I am not comfortable doing this for someone else.

On the other hand, I have never done things for a Crown (in the SCA), as I’ve never interacted with them personally before. So when Lea told me she was sewing Their Highnesses’ garb, I jumped at the chance to contribute without making patterns (and a lovely meal at high table at Midwinter confirmed that Her Highness is completely delightful). Contributing means buttons.

Lots of them.

I had made some before, but never 100 and never this small (wool ones are a little bulkier than the linen). So far, I’ve got ~70 done. I will be making buttons this evening until I’m finished so I can hand them off to Lea and Rebinah tomorrow evening. But at this point, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the whole experience.

These things are damned easy to sew. Since I find them pleasant, easy work, allow me to show you the ease of creating said buttons (directions taken from this most excellent website):

Step 1 (the most time-consuming):

Cut out the buttons. I used the end of a spool of thread and drew my circles with a regular pen. Here’s a finished button next to the fabric circle:

Step 2:

Sew a running stitch around the edge of the fabric, roughly 1 mm from the edge (too close and your fabric unravels, and you have to stuff the button with extra fabric; I find that 1mm allows the button to be self-supporting).

Step 3:

Draw the fabric  up using your running stitch, into a tiny little bag (I made loads of these as a teenager, and used them to keep multi-sided dice; yes, I’m aware that I’m a nerd).

Step 4:

Flatten the little bag, and using a running stitch, stitch around the edge of the flattened “pouch,” as close to the edge as you can get.

And from the front:

Step 5:

Pull this tight, stuffing the raw edges into the button as you pull. Be careful not to pull too  hard and break the thread (I did this once or twice).

Step 6:

Secure your button. I made straight stitches perpendicular to each other, going through the drawn-up edges. Then I made a knot in the center.

Ta-da! Buttons.

This spool of thread is a standard spool, and should give you an idea of the size of the buttons.

I laid 50 next to one another and realized that 50 (what I initially agreed to make) would not be sufficient. Luckily, this is quick work and I should have them all done by this evening. Thank goodness for Netflix on demand.

Speaking of which, I finally saw The Big Lebowski and am unsure why I never saw it before. Truly I was missing something great. “That rug really tied the room together.”

Yo.

BMR: Khhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

(From the epiglottis)

[Number whatever in the Bollywood Movie Reviews]

So. The Chicken Goddess and I, as has been mentioned before, were thrilled about seeing My Name Is Khan.

Oh, were we in for a surprise.

First, let me say that we have no issues with SRK or Kajol; as usual, they were charming and delightful to watch. They can make a film a year together for the rest of always. That’d be okay. (It would also be okay if SRK keeps posting photos of himself and his kids to his twitter stream, because he’s completely charming and adorable. He can also keep making guest appearances anywhere he wants, also because he’s completely charming and adorable. So is Kajol, but in a more understated, less public way.)

Allow us to sum up.

Sometimes

You just need a little extra something to remind you that you’re loved:

I mean, I know he loves me, but the husband giving me this bouquet of flowers was some extra icing on the cake.

I’ve only ever been given flowers by him (well, except for flowers from family members, which is something different entirely).

And they’re still nice! Since Valentine’s Day!

Awwwwwww. Shucks.

Weekend wrap-up

Many things happened this weekend.

Firstly – we went and saw a live wrestling performance in Avondale Estates (after having some pizza at Savage Pizza). While I enjoyed the wrestling (Platinum Championship Wrestling), I think I would have preferred it not to be at midnight.

Secondly – made the most delicious pancakes for the husband for his birthday. It was a recipe from GOOD magazine, and was basically a giant puffy baked skillet-cake with grilled pears and a brown sugar glaze. Delectable. We plan on doing it again, only with blueberries or peaches.

Thirdly – looked at lots of fabric, bought some, and had dinner at Coco Loco. Coco Loco has dishes that I only remember from my college days, when Lily and Manuel did that thing that one time with arroz con gandules plus chicken and tostones. We will be eating at Coco Loco again.

Fourthly – tried in vain to find Jo-Ann’s. We’ve looked it up online since the weekend.

Fifthly – Had lunch with B & T and their son, E, who is cute as a button. It was good to catch up with them; we used to do Battlestar Galactica nights at their house, but then came E and the end of BSG, so we haven’t seen them for a while. Also, I am finding it convenient to type in acronyms. Saves time.

Sixthly – met with a friend’s fiancee to go over details about their wedding invitations. Ate some fro-yo. Mmmm fro-yo.

Seventhly – saw My Name Is Khan (MNIK) with the CG. She and I have a blog post in the works about this. I will not say more until then, except that perhaps I built it up a bit more than was intelligent, and I totally love SRK and Kajol regardless. Expect a more robust review later.

And then it was Monday! I am feeling a little not so good, so this week feels like a vacation from the weekend, even though I’m at work. Sad, isn’t it?

Curling is metal

Okay, so there are only 6 more days until you don’t have to hear me blathering about curling. But in the meantime, there is this:

METAL.

Oh, Friday

I have been lacking in the motivation lately and the weekend looms, which means more non-blogging, but will involve My Name is Khan (!).

Anyway. Today I translated some of a Hindi song into English for Mr. Jaipur, only not so well. Mostly I thought he was challenging me, but then I found out he really did want to know, so I think I only confused him,  but my Hindi knowledge consists of words I know from films and various conjugations of “to be” (hona) mostly in the present tense. I can refer to myself and others as various dishes of food. For example, “main saag paneer hoon” and “aap naan nahi hain.” So when confronted with words such as “deewana” (which I have until this point incorrectly assumed was “crazy” but is in fact “lover”) and “vaade sare,” I am dumbfounded and turn to the imperfect skills of Google Translate. This leads to much guessing on my part. But to my credit, I only missed the first two lines and did a pretty passable job at the rest of the translation. I have added the film that contains the song in question to my Netflix queue. And also a German course to my LiveMocha lineup. Because I’m impulsive and crazy, all at once.

Still no camera cable.

In the meantime, are you aware that Tavi is the coolest teenager on the planet? When I was 13, I was no nearly so cool. Heck, I’m not that cool now. Kudos to her folks for being equally awesome and nurturing her creativity. (I’ve been obsessively following her and Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes for a while; they both completely fascinate me.)

I blame you, SRK

No, really.

Sorry to have been a slacker with the blogging lately, but it has been an SRK-fest in the world of Happygoth and The Chicken Goddess (wouldn’t that be an awesome amusement park?), which means that nothing else has gotten done.

Okay, so that’s not true. I did get a lot of work done on Saturday and met with some friends to talk about wedding invitations and introduced the Husband to the delight that is Zyka (nom nom nom) and I think in there was Valentine’s Day (wherein I made him several meals and cookies and we watched the Smallville Justice Society special), but you get the idea, no?

But there has been something of an SRK-fest. We had intended to watch Paheli a while back, and found ourselves with a damaged copy (that’s another story), so had to put it of for months. The CG acquired another, and it was watched and I think it might be one of my all-time favorites. I’m a little biased toward all things Rajasthan, but seriously – romance! ghosts! SRK! turbans! sweet ‘staches! And Rani Mukherjee is adorable.

And then I have been overwhelmed with a glut of information about My Name is Khan from bloglandia. I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE THIS FILM. The guy at Namaste Bollywood has been urging the CG to go see it, like, every time she goes in to buy DVDs. So then I spent four hours (cumulative) hunting for interviews and videos and articles, and my brain is kind of buzzing. I wasn’t so keen on SRK when I first started watching his films, but now I think he’s delightful (and very funny; his tweets are great). I have no idea what this means for me and my productivity, but this coupled with FarScape means that I’ll either (a) get nothing done or (b) get quite a bit done while watching TV.

On the positive side, this obsession with Bollywood films has paid off; not only have I been able to converse with Mr. Jaipur (we chat over IM; he helps me with my Hindi and I help him with his English) about the weather — “mausam tha…” — but also we talked at length about Three Idiots and what an excellent film it is. Not all unproductive, see?

I have some photos of the flowers my husband gave me for Valentine’s Day, but my camera cable has vanished, yet again (one hopes it has run off to spawn more camera cables and that I will have a full litter at my disposal soon).

Pssssst

It’s snowing outside in Atlanta!

(And it appears as though everyone has freaked out in advance so the streets are not too bad so far.)

So busy

I will get back to blogging, but my life went KABOOM and now I have no time and did I mention FarScape (I think I did, repeatedly), so there you go.

Firstly,

HRITHIK ROSHAN IS ON TWITTER.

TWITTER.

It has seriously sapped all my blog energy, and by it I mean Twitter, not Hrithik Roshan being on twitter.

And then, I made some garb and here are some pictures of it, but not of the whole thing:

Mostly the dupatta in this picture, which is lovely and not something I made. But I look not bad here, so it’s up. There in the background are my lovely assistant, Don (Don don don don) and His Excellency, Baron Cathal.

Another view, with some of my shiny shiny silk outfit. One of the rare times the dupatta actually stayed on my head (I have not gotten the hang of this). Also here are Guillaume and family, Don, His Excellency, Belthora, and a gentleman whose name I cannot remember (but I think it’s Geoffrey).

Standing with Their Excellencies after being named Baronial Art and Science Champion. I thin I had stopped weeping uncontrollably at this point. My pants are hidden behind that gentleman’s head. I will have to put on the outfit just for a photo. Also here are THL Andreva, who is making an announcement (and has an awesome hat), Their Excellencies, a Mistress of the Laurelate (whose name I forget, but who I do remember is a Laurel!), THL Mikal Isernfocar, Lady Lucia, and Maya (who probably has a title, too, but I can’t remember it). And another person with a camera who I do not know.

And this is before that other picture, when I was remembering being reminded to curtsy to Their Majesties and Her Highness, and apparently my weeping had Her Majesty weeping, as well. Score.

Dang, that outfit is shiny. Yessssssss.

[All photos taken by CW Merk, who goes by Bjorn in the SCA, and is thoroughly excellent.]

Chutney

Some things I am good at. Others? Not so much.

My mom brought some dhokla mix to share, and so instead of cooking it in a pressure cooker (like I think you’re supposed to), I cooked it in a big steamer pot and the result was a little mushy and not quite what I think it was supposed to be like. That is, it was crumbly and not very tasty. So I made some chutney (coriander) to go with it, and the husband was blending it and added more sugar because it was too spicy and now it tastes weird.

He calls it Green Evil. I don’t think this is too terribly off-base.

Well, anyway, he likes it and I like it sort of and next time I will cut back on both the chilis and sugar and maybe I will find it more edible. On the upside, though, we got to consume most of a fresh coconut, which was awesome.

So, in the end, chutney 1, Happygoth 0. Oh, chutney – I demand a rematch.
