Hi, not crazy.

Well, maybe a little. HOWEVER. Superman is indeed real, and lo here is video proof:

Okay, okay. So his name is actually Alexander Rae and not Clark Kent. But nonetheless, he is the best Superman I’ve ever encountered (ever) and, well, I think it’s obvious why I made a complete and utter fool of myself. Judging from some of the photos in the video, I’m not the only nerd to have done that.

(psssssssst he’s going to be at DragonCon this year, too. I promise to behave myself. Mostly.)

ISN’T THE ILLUSION TOTALLY BELIEVABLE? (Gratuitous shouting is ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Need more convincing?

View slide numbah 6.

So, yeah… Here’s his website:

Ooh, fancy.

I’m sort of passable when it comes to sari draping, mostly because I’m very stubborn and do a lot of practicing. My pleats are pretty neat.

However, I’m not so hot with the pallu. I can’t ever seem to get it to lie properly, to fall across my back correctly, etc. So I did some YouTube sleuthing (don’t laugh – YouTube is a  great resource when it comes to sari draping how-tos). I still haven’t found a video that helps with just the pallu pleating part (I thin I’m going to have to get a hands-on tutorial from somebody), but I did find this:

It’s a sort of modified kaccha drape, and one I think I might be able to manage! I have no idea where I’d wear it, but I’m up for trying new things. Also, I have a 9-yard sari that might  just work!

(According to the internets, this is apparently a “sexy” drape because it’s intended to be practical for work, and therefore shows your legs more. Totally innocuous in the U.S., but judging by some of the comments on related videos, scandalous to some in India. Then again, some other people mentioned, with examples, that this drape was once a favorite of certain royal persons. I suppose it’s like most fashion, and open to considerable debate.)

WH is a pirate

Okay, so not so much in the pillaging, smelly, scallywag kind of way, but he does have a shoulder pet.

Being a land pirate, he has a shoulder cat. Observe:

Yep. Cute, right?

Kind of like an owl.

An owl who finds his proximity to the hanging fan chains very convenient.

And who may or may not be practicing to be a zombie. YOUR BRAINS THEY ARE SPICY.

At this point, WH says, “Uh, a little help here?” And then I remind him that he taught Lemmy Cat to do this, and that it’s his own fault. I do keep Lemmy’s claws trimmed, though, just in case.

And then after this, it’s time for a catnap.

That cat never does anything normal.

Poll

I am currently growing my hair (a) because I am too lazy/cheap to get it cut and (b) to see how long it will grow (my mom’s hair reached her ankles at one point, so the genes are there).

However, once it reaches your waist, the length changes very, very slowly. On one hand, the long hair is nice,  because it fits with my SCA persona quite well. I don’t need extra hairpieces, and I don’t have that bangs problem I did before, which is that I needed to pin them back when wearing garb, and could never slick them down enough to satisfy my own vanity (alas, DEP gel, once a staple in my hair arsenal, is not easy to find so no shell-head for me unless somebody’s got an alternate solution).

On the other hand, it takes two days to dry, a lot of hair dye (I want to switch to indigo, but it would cost ~$75 each time, just for the indigo, in order to dye the whole length), gets tangled around my neck when I sleep, and is nearly long enough to brush the toilet seat when I go to the bathroom (I know! gross!). Obviously it is decision time.

So, Hive Mind, what should I do?

Note: any of these options will be an at-home affair, because while I am willing to be un-lazy, I am still cheap.

thanks, Dawn!

My coworker and friend Dawn does these amazing parties and bridal showers and weddings. She makes things for them, and brainstorms awesome decor. She’s trying to do it more publicly, as a professional, and needed business cards, and so she asked me to help, which I gladly agreed to.

If you read her blog, you know she’s a lover of vintage things, especially fabrics and handmade home items. Lately she’s been really interested in vintage clothing labels, so she asked for a simple card that mimicked a clothing label, with her contact info and her name on the front. She had an idea for the back, which was to sew a scrap of fabric from her extensive collection to the card, and let the stitching show through to the front.

I came up with a script version of her name, chose a color palette, and printed up cards in five different colors. I must have looked at 200 vintage labels as I was doing this (but oh so much fun), and made much use of my Wacom tablet. Then Dawn took them home and assembled them, adding a little pinked edge. I think they came out great:

She has the best eye for color combinations and textures. I made sure to print a solid color on the back of the card, so that if the fabric curled a little, you’d still see something designed:

(I love the fabrics she chose.)

Some more photos (taken with her lovely camera):

Such a great project! (Thanks to Dawn for all the great photos!)

And then, as an extra little thank-you, this bag was on my desk this morning (photo not taken with Dawn’s spiffy camera):

When we’d gone to Sam Flax to choose paper, I had tried a tea sample and debated whether or not to buy it. Dawn’s quick response was, “NO,” and thinking that she was helping me with my self-control, I thanked her  and didn’t think any more of it. But inside that little bag was this:

The tea and a fancy tea mug! That Dawn is sneaky. And awesome. And a great design client.

🙂

ALL RIGHT.

I am a lazy bum. I know this. And really, I have no excuse, except for a very flimsy one, which is that I only have an iPhone for photography, and I am ashamed of the photos it takes.

But never fear! I have hoarded some photographs, and here they are, along with a narrative.

Last weekend, Xylo and the B.I.L visited the ATL (see what I did there?) so that we could all go see Wrestlemania XXVII (that’s 27, for you non-Roman-numeral-literate types). I’m not a huge fan of wrestling, personally. I feel insincere attending wrestling events, even a little guilty, because I figure I’m stealing a seat from a legitimately interested fan. I don’t think Vince McMahon cares, though. He’s just happy the seat is filled and paid for.

And you know what? It was every bit the spectacle I hoped it would be. The Great Khali won the dark match before the show (in a 20-man lumberjack thingy), mostly by pretending to rest against the ropes and then getting up at the last minute and bopping the other guy in the head, knocking him out of the ring. I suppose that if you’re over 7 feet tall, you get to do that.

The staging is elaborate. This was the entrance ramp:

Various things happen there as the wrestlers emerge for their matches; videos, pyrotechnics, gigantic inflatable letters. My favorite was for the Undertaker, who got little balls of flame. The colors change. The lights go crazy. It’s pretty exciting.

Now, you may be able to tell that this is the Georgia Dome (if not, it’s okay; this was my first time seeing it, too). Generally, there’s a field-based sporting event held here, and the field is occupied only by the players. Not so for Wrestlemania. The ring is actually pretty small compared to the Dome, and the WWE filled the remaining field space with chairs for what’s called “floor seating.” The ring announcer informed us at the end of the evening that we’d set a record for Dome attendance, with over 71,000 people in the Dome. I believe it. Here’s a view of the crowd from my seat:

Piece that together with the crowd in the first photo, and you get a sense of the vastness of the crowd. Xylo commented to me as we were shuffling through the masses on the way to MARTA, “I’d really like not to be around people anymore.” I hear you, man. I hear you.

The wrestling enthusiasts. I think Xylo is tweeting. Lucky bastard. I couldn’t get any signal, probably because 71,000 other people were attempting to tweet/update their Facebook profiles.

And as a reminder of the once-in-a-lifetime (maybe) experience, here is my new water cup:

Originally filled with Orange Fanta, it is now half of my daily water intake requirement. Stylish and practical! Thanks, WWE!

Now, on to crafty things. Remember that lucet I said I bought at Gulf Wars? Also remember I said I have a crappy camera? Well, I borrowed Dawn’s Canon, and here you go – lucet photos.

The lucet is a braiding tool which basically makes a little knitted cord that you can use to tie up clothing, as a drawstring, etc. Madelena attempted to teach me and corral her son at the same time (which we realized was not as good an idea as we originally estimated), and then I looked through no fewer than five websites before figuring it out one evening at home. Unfortunately I have not figured out a use for it for myself, but I am comfortable gifting it to people. I just like making it. And aren’t the photos spiffy? I have been borrowing people’s cameras to see which to buy. I have a film Canon at home, which is great, but not so good for learning, because film is expensive. I tried a Nikon, and I was frustrated by it. I tried out the Canon for maybe 15 minutes, and am sold. I’ve only ever used Canons, and I think maybe I’m a little more biased than I thought. But hey- I’ve got a lens that works already, so it’s a win all around!

(No knitting photos. I’ve been practicing the uke like mad and the knitting has suffered. Your consolation prize is that I’ll post a uke video real soon. Promise!)

Regarding Friday’s post.

Haha. April Fool.

(Except that you probably already guessed that.)

Monster Trucks!

So you all may have noticed that this blog has be a little slow lately, and now I’m telling you the reason.

On the trip to Gulf Wars, we passed by Talladega speedway. Back home I got to researching NASCAR racing, and discovered all kinds of websites and videos about monster truck rallies. I can’t believe I didn’t notice this before! I mean, what’s not to like about gigantic trucks with names like Big Dawg and Ruff Time smashing tiny cars?

I’ll still be crafting, but you’ll get a couple of posts a month about knitting, and lots of posts about monster trucks.

Here’s my current favorite:

Comic books? Check. Monster trucks? Check. It’s all my favorite things at the same time! Like cookies and cream ice cream. Or a pani puri taco. Or something else that combines two awesome things into one.

And this blog? Back on track to being awesome.

March Wrap-Up

(mmmm… Gulf Wars and Mega Moon. Or whatever it was they were calling it.)

I did a lot in March. Actually, I don’t remember the first part of the month, since it was mostly spent working and dealing with SCA administrative stuff, and went by in a sort of blur. However, the 2 weeks at the end made up for a lot.

Summarized, here’s what went on:

Attended my first Gulf Wars (actually, my first large-scale SCA war, period)

Finished kanchala #2

Bought a lucet (finally)

Bought a supported drop spindle

Met lots of great folks who live out-of-kingdom

Played Holi for the first time

Drove to Suwanee by myself for the first time

Learned three new songs on my ukulele

Met Superman

I have now acquired two new crafts, one of which is an extension of a craft I already do. The supported drop spindle is hard to spin with, but I imagine that like the regular drop spindle, it will become easier in time. I wound all the cotton I’d spun already off the small spindle I bought at last year’s S&W and have begun to spin the blue wool and silk blend my lovely husband won for me at the combined Ean Airghead/Al Arsalan holiday party, and it’s lovely.

The lucet is pretty much the best lazy craft ever. I try to carry sock knitting around, but it’s still pretty bulky. When I had a European persona, I coveted a lucet, and never had the money for one. Now that I no longer need lucet cord, I can finally afford a lucet. I plan on making lots of lucet cord and then gifting it.

And so then after the crazy whirlwind SCA event and Holi and all kinds of errands, I spent a morning with CG being denied institutional worship (the ISKCON temple and the Orthodox chapel were both closed), eating yogurt for lunch and buying yet more yarn. That evening I piled into a car with husband, belongings, Jennie and Obby and tootled on off to Orlando for Megacon. There was a brief interlude at an excellent Middle Eastern restaurant (sort of Lebanese-Kashmiri-Punjabi-Turkish), and then a weird sort of three days wandering around following this guy:

who looked like this the next day:

I kid you not. I feel as though I have now actually met Superman. He had the whole persona down! I may have followed him around in sort of creepy stalker-fashion, to the point where he began to recognize me, and where I made Jennie drive around the block a couple of times so I could ogle him.

But really. You all know how I feel about Superman, especially the Christopher Reeve version. This is like meeting the physical embodiment of a fandom.

Now I’m back at work. This weekend is another apprentices class, which we’ll do at Fool’s War. Beldthora is teaching us bobbin lace! Should be pretty relaxing.

Just in time for Wrestlemania on Sunday. Wish me luck!

Holi

We celebrated Holi this year a day late, because of Gulf Wars, but it was so worth it. I convinced a group of unsuspecting friends (including Jennie and SurlyQueen) to go out to a little field next to Kennesaw State Park and play Holi, even though I didn’t tell them more than that they should wear clothes they didn’t care about ruining. (Heh heh heh.) The initial plan was to play at Gulf Wars, but I think I underestimated just how crazy busy an event like that is, and so the gulal came home with me (but soon-to-be-blogging-Lea, it’s on for next year, no excuses). I am buying even more next time around.

Anyway. I put the color into some deep-sided thalis I bought, got out some squeezy water bottles, and then started it off by smearing red on WH’s face. This sequence is basically start-to-finish, from only a little color to being totally covered in it.

The husband prepares some colored water. Next year I’ll buy more green and pink.

I got Jennie pretty good. She’s still cleaning red out of her ears.

And then she got me.

Handing out the thalis.

Wendi did a good job of avoiding us, except for that one time when I got her in the eye. Maybe that’s why she was avoiding us.

She had the monopoly on yellow. I was pretty covered in yellow.

Poof!

There was a lot of cackling.

Ha ha yes.

We had a great time. It cost me maybe $10 and was more fun than I’ve had in a while. I know I giggled a whole lot.

The husband was so proud that he looked like this for the rest of the day:

Yep. I tried to clean it off his ear but he wouldn’t let me.

Here’s to next year!
