This is so awesome.
(Incidentally, I’m in love with this story – I was given a comic book version as a child, and recently re-read it, and think it’s the best thing ever.)

Big egg!
Atlanta is virtually underwater, and it reminds me of Futurama. You know the episode, right? The one where they go to the lost city of Atlanta, where the mermaids live (and look suspiciously like Col. Sanders of KFC fame)? Well, trust me – it was awesome, and I am beginning to believe it a little, after all this rain.
It has been raining since last Monday. Wednesday, when I attempted to go to SCA, I had to do some creative circumnavigating around very large puddles. There was one under the bridge on North Avenue, where I couldn’t turn around, so I soldiered through it and aside from a squeaky belt, came out none the worse for wear.
On Saturday was the Barony’s yearly signature event, Red Tower. We had hoped to avoid the rainy weather for the event, which we did (mostly), but my chappals are completely ruined (that is, mildewy), and I still don’t know what possessed me to make the bottom band of my chiton white cotton. I think I’ll dye that bit a dark color for future use. I did stay inside most of the day, working troll, so I was relatively dry. The death of my chappals is a convenient excuse to go back to my favorite Indian clothing stores again (oh. noes.), so there is that. The CG wore a couple of awesome hats, one of which was a wig and one of which was not (well, it was, only it wasn’t), and I met some new people. At court, there were awards, including the Chivalry Award to Mandin, who utterly deserved it, and the Red Tower award to the fighter who won, and then an award to Cillian, who won fencing (apparently), and then in an amazing bit of surreality, I was given the Heart of South Downs. To the uninitiated, this means that the gentlemen got together and voted to give said award to a lady who is gracious and ladylike and has many similar qualities (the Chivalry award is the same thing, only from us to them), and I’m still not certain that I deserve it totally, but I’d do them all a disservice to be contrary, so I thank them all. And as an added bit of me being a gigantic nerd, I have been wearing it (on a chain I dug up out of the ol’ jewelry drawer) under my shirt for the past two days. I may never take it off, except to shower.
I got blood taken at the doctor this morning, and as you do when you go to the doctor as a grown up, treated myself to a smoothie afterward (you know – for electrolytes and stuff).
I had intended to knit at Knitch on Sunday, but when that happened, I said I’d knit at home. What have I done, in actuality? Read 2.5 Sookie Stackhouse books. That’s what I’ve done. I’m renting Season 1 of True Blood this evening.
This rain is awesome.
(Actually, I’m posting these because I like seeing the rise in visits, but they’re cool and I didn’t know where else to put them)
Alright. At Dragon*Con, I like to see cool things. Mostly costumes. Here are the ones I managed to photograph:

Hee hee. His pants are shiny.

Um. You’ve got a little Cthulhu on your dress.

Yabba. Dabba.

This fellow is thoroughly armed.

Woo! She made that dress! I was impressed.

Barney and Fred – you’ve changed.

Harvey Birdman was in my hotel room (I actually yelled this when I opened the door)!

Blurry, but this was such a creative costume. Wonderflonium! FTW.

Crow is dressed as The Comedian. Also FTW.

Steampunk Edward Scissorhands. Am I the only one who thinks Edward Scissorhands is hot? Well, this guy was no exception.
And finally, because I am twelve, the unfortunate effect of perspective on this sign made me giggle:

The rest of the set is here.
Day 4: Sunday
This day was another forgetful day. I slept in, which was awesome. After I got up, I went with Becca to get breakfast, and then put on the costume I invented the night before, which ended up being really awesome. The husband showed up after we ate, and we went to see a Mike Mignola panel.

Blurry, I know; My camera is not so great.
It was a little disappointing, in the end; he is fascinating to listen to, but the husband has had a Lobster Johnson costume for a few years now, and was waiting to show it to Mignola, who sort of blew off the other Lobster Johnson who had shown up. In the past, Mignola’s editor has been enthusiastic about the costume, so the husband decided to keep that as his good memory of the costume and consequently didn’t worry about meeting Mignola later. We did more wandering again until 2:30, when I sat at Jennie‘s booth and the husband went to another panel. After that we wandered some more, then went and got takeout and watched the Masquerade (first time I’ve seen the whole thing!). We had intended to see Arc Attack, but the line stretched around the building, and they had cut it off to more folks, so I gave up on that, instead hanging around in the Marriott, looking at folks in costume.

Like Edward and Chewie. It’s a match made in heaven – Edward is a dick (the character, not the dude dressed as him; the guy was actually pretty awesome), and Chewie has the ability to smack him around for it. Perfect.
The kilt blowing was wild. Baobh and husband were out, husband having gotten food poisoning, so we ran it solo. About 10 guys in, somebody called the cops to shut us down (somebody showed a little too much). We had to “pretend” to use the leaf blower, and while we were explaining, a guy booed the cop. So I told him he could either a. quiet down or b. leave the line. He chose to quiet down. I felt pretty empowered. In the end, nobody got arrested, and we had a Snape in a kilt to finish it all off, so it was cool. We went for a drink afterward with Telaryn, chatted with some anonymous Canadians, then went to bed.
Totally the best drink ever, after all the bruhaha with the cop.
And we saw this, which was The Best Thing Ever:

(It’s like I can touch you!)
Day 5: Monday
We spent part of the morning packing up and loading things into the car. After that, we got some lunch, then the husband gave blood, and I attempted (again unsuccessfully) to get James Marster’s autograph. But we did get some autographs for other people (Bros in Law), including one from Richard Kiel, the actor who played Jaws in the James Bond films. He’s really very nice (and HUGE!), and as a bonus for buying an autograph, allowed us to take a free photo:

This was the con standard. There were photos posted at his booth of many other people in the same pose. It was awesome.
I killed time doing one last pass of the Art Show and Comic Artist’s Alley. I bought some new vinyl figurines. I sort of took it easy.
The rest of the day was spent wandering around the shopping-type rooms with Luciano and finally watching Jennie load a surprisingly small amount of stuff into her car. We went home, took a nap, then Baobh, the husbands, and myself all met Jennie at the Vortex for some burgers. At some point we tried to remember what we’d done over the weekend, but none of us could recall details. I still don’t remember most of Saturday afternoon or portions of Sunday.
And then Tuesday we got some breakfast, wandered around Oakland Cemetery, and then sat at home before I put Baobh and husband on the train to the airport, and went to class. Wednesday I sat on the couch a lot. It was great.
I totally gakked these from Jennie (Jennie, let me know if you want any not linked from your site):
What do we all have in common? Guess. (Hint: it’s not black clothing)
I did the Rajasthani garb thing again for the parade.
Bringing teh sexy.
Full shot of the Friday costume (I got a compliment on my sari drape from the hostess at Ted’s!)
This is the gist of the Kilt blowing. It is crazy.
Yeah. Pretty much like that.
I’ll tell about Sunday tomorrow.
(The rest of her D*C photos are here.)
Day 3: Saturday

(My costume of the day, photographed by the lovely Heather)
Saturday has the most gaps in it, though not too many.
Got up early to do the D*Con parade. It was the first year I’ve walked in it, and although my alarm never went off, I managed to get up on time and get dressed and be at the park by 9 for staging. I wore my Rajasthani garb with a new veil, and fiddled with it the whole way (it is hard to wave and fiddle). We had about 15 folks, including a couple of awesome musicians, and TheChickenGoddess wore her Hot Dress (TM). Her husband was a hit in his chariot. My husband was helping to pull said chariot. In the future, we’re going to plan to have plainclothes flyer-hander-outers, since it worked pretty well this time around.

Afterward, we did another clothes-change, and the husband wandered in his Lectroid outfit for a while (see above), before which we got lunch and delivered it to Jennie. She had no panels that day. The husband and I saw the dealers’ room, the exhibitors rooms, and took a turn around the Walk of Fame, which was disappointingly empty. I failed completely to get a James Marsters autograph for Matt. Better luck in the future, I guess. We also met up with the ChickenGoddess for facial hair hijinks (CG, if you don’t want this up, tell me and I’ll take it down):

Doesn’t she have a rockin’ ‘stache? I had one, too, but I have no photo of myself. I was hirsute. It was hard to laugh, thought, because the glue would become un-tacky and so you kind of had to hold your moustache on and giggle. There was a lot of moustache-holding.
Then we had a snack, watched stuff on DC*TV, saw a Patrick Stewart panel (he is hilarious), and then later on met Telaryn for dinner. We had intended to do Hooters, but it was a zoo and the employees were very rude, so we ended up at a Mexican restaurant, which was much better (and quieter and more polite).
That evening was evening 2 of kilt-blowing. I wore the day’s costume, and got even more waivers signed, and it went okay, except for a photobombing by Nigel the pirate. We hung out a bit and then went to bed. It was exhausting.
See, here’s what I did: So that I wouldn’t forget, I typed up a recap of all 5 days, which I then saved to my work computer, and consequently left on my work computer. However, I am making up for it by telling you about 2 days at once. Thursday and Friday! Hooray! With pictures!
Okay.
I will attempt to recap Dragon*Con.
