And then, and then…

I don’t know what’s weirder, the sweater or the fact that Wil Wheaton’s wearing it:

I found this on the You Knit What? blog, which is, sadly, now not updating ever again. It’s too bad, really. That blog was awesome.

The Scarf of Doom has been restarted now for the 15th time. I made it to row 5 and then screwed up, again. Since I have to gift the scarf a week from today, I think I might scrap the pattern entirely and do something easy and fast that I know I can knit successfully (though I’ll try again and see if I can get past where I was; maybe if I try enough times, I’ll eventually get there).

I am such a dork.

Last night, although I didn’t go to the concert, I drove past the Masquerade to see if I could spy any of the members of Type O Negative outside.

As I was driving at the time, I was unsuccessful. Also, since my car has fish painted all over it, I decided it would be not inconspicuous to drive past a second time for a closer look (the last time they were in town I was with Jennie and I made her drive past a second time, and that time I did see at least one band member).

In other news, I have successfully turned the heel on my Ladybug socks, and have discovered what I was doing wrong with the Scarf of Doom (I was knitting an extra stitch after the YOs). Pictures later.

Pirates, witches and France.

This past weekend was nutty. I think I tried to fit too many things in, but I had a blast. Today I’m tired and dizzy, but I think I’ve narrowed the dizziness down to allergies, so I’m pretty okay with it. Anyway.

The Moonlight-watching party was a success. We made steak and goat cheese mashed potatoes and stuffed ourselves and then watched TV and then I kind of rolled myself home, feeling a lot like my Mom’s cat, who is too fat to get up onto the couch without help. And Jennie and I plotted our trip to France in 2009, when we will go to a comic book convention and then sightsee and I will hopefully get back some of that French speaking skill I’ve lost since the last time I was in France. I spent a decent bit of this morning on the internet, researching TGV ticket prices, so we can possibly fit in another country during the week or so we’ll be in Europe.

Saturday the husband went off to do his thing and Jennie and I went to the Little 5 Points Halloween parade, which was not as much fun as all the people dressed up to watch the parade (ourselves included). We hoped to see our favorite Jack Sparrow, but instead saw our favorite Kilt Guy and the Photo Gnome, neither of whom saw us. We went and got sushi and beer afterward, because I was dressed like this:

And since I was dressed like a pirate, I thought I needed beer. It follows, I think.

Beer?

Certainly.

And Jennie had her flying monkey, which is a stand-in for the real flying monkey I’m sure she’ll have some day:

Maybe these ladies can help:

Fabulous.

It was an excellent parade, all in all.

The next day we went to church for St Luke’s Day, then went home and took a nap, and then the Chicken Goddess came to see the bells (the husband is a towel bell ringer). She seemed much impressed, as she stayed for several hours and got to see a group of English ringers ring all ten of the bells (which is rare).

After the Chicken Goddess left, we went to Netherworld and scared ourselves and then to a diner for dinner with Jennie and some friends of hers (who really ought to hang out with us more since they are Cool People). I did the thing I usually do with haunted houses; that is, I was so good at not being scared that I was not scared and then the haunted house was not as fun as it might have been. It is all my fault.

And amongst all that craziness, we bought the cat a hat what looks like a chicken:

He was very patient, but if he could talk he’d say, “if only I had thumbs…”

Little to no knitting was accomplished, but I’m an arm and an ear away from finishing the stuffed bear, and I’m ready to turn the heel on my ladybug jaywalker socks. More on that when it’s more interesting…

Nothing much

I have nothing much to say today except that

1. The bear I’m knitting has only one arm, and the arm he has is very deformed-looking. I believe I have overstuffed him. I’m extremely tempted to leave him that way and give him to my friend who is going to have a baby. Anyway. In spite of the one-armedness. This will teach the child to respect differences and those with disabilities.

2. I ate two cupcakes today, one for breakfast and one after lunch. They were both delicious, and exceedingly healthy. And I wonder why I’ve been gaining weight so quickly the past couple of years…

3. Jennie and I watched Moonlight last night, which is a horrible show but a lot of fun. I watched an episode by myself, but found it much more enjoyable when watched with someone else, as it is not so fun to be snarky at the television alone with the cat. The cat, he does not understand the English so good.

And that is all, except that we will be watching Moonlight this evening and I will possibly get some work done and maybe cast on another Easy Feather and Fan Scarf, unless I find a better pattern in the meantime.

Daleks and other things.

I thought I might never see the internet again…

That is, I’ve been busy and haven’t gotten a chance to post anything. However, I have a small moment, and here is what has been going on:

The in-laws visited this past weekend, and we did much antiquing. I scored a first printing of Rousseau’s Confessions (Volume 1), in French (like, duh), from 1782. I paid not a lot for it. Well, actually, I didn’t pay anything for it; it ended up being an early birthday present. Other than the deterioration of its leather spine, the book is in excellent condition. I’m very proud of the find.

We also ate at many tasty places, and I was very full all weekend.

And I gave my father-in-law this:

Mmmmm. Hot Dalek action. It was the only place well-lit enough that I could take a decent photo.

And here is the father-in-law with the Dalek:

He was absolutely thrilled, and I was thrilled that he was thrilled, and he was thrilled that… oh, never mind.

The pattern comes from here and is very easy to do.

Soooo…. yeah. That’s pretty much the weekend, summed up. We got some furniture, and I made a lot of headway on the bear I’m knitting for a friend. More on that tomorrow, methinks.

I’m not dead! Really!

I’ve just been very busy. Mostly work, but also other things. Things such as:

At Knitsch this past Sunday, Lea (who I cannot find on the internet) showed up and finished her first pair of socks! And she learned a new bind-off! One I hope she’ll show me! (Exclamation point!) They really are quite beautiful. I started a pair at exactly the same time, since she and I were both being taught at the same time by the Chickengoddess, but she has been much more focused than I. Although I have started and made progress on several other projects in the meantime, I have not yet finished the socks, so that shows just how scatterbrained I am when it comes to being artistic. This is how I paint, as well. More on that sometime else.

She also made sure to press them to her face, as is generally a good idea with anything soft and knitted and wool, unless you are allergic. In that case, I’d advise against it. But she is not:

This is blurry but still quite adorable.

Along with the discussion of me starting things before I finish other things, I made some more progress on my Ladybug Jaywalkers, and have possibly convinced the Chickengoddess to make a pair of her own:

They are going along quite quickly and are very fun. The aforementioned Lea thinks she might be okay with top-down socks. I certainly am.

And then the Chickengoddess said I should photograph the socks with beer. So I did. She’s very persuasive.

The evening before, I went to a party hosted by Robert Lee of Methane Studios. It was a lot like a college party, in that we drank beer, watched a movie, and sat outside and talked a lot, and then someone brought out the Methane eyeball and burned it in effigy. I’m fond of this shot, taken after we decided to put it in the fire pit, for safety reasons:

Artistic, no? Well, at any rate, knitting the next day was fun because after the eyeball burning I drank too much and woke up with a killer hangover the next morning. That’ll teach me.

As promised…

Here are my Ladybug socks, in their first incarnation:

I did this much in only maybe two hours! I’m really proud of myself.

And then I got creative with my photography.

And though the lighting doesn’t go the color of the yarn much justice, I thought the tentacles were worth sharing.

I’m really loving the patterns that allow me to memorize the work and then go from there, so that I’m not wondering where I am in the pattern. Also patterns that stray from the generic 2×2 rib, which is what is keeping me from finishing my first socks, the blue toe-up socks knit with Goth Chick yarn (I was going to link to the colorway but I cannot locate it right now).

And lastly:

Speaking of tentacles, the Smithsonian has just put out a book in conjunction with the University of Chicago Press (go, Maroons!) entitled The Deep that is all about the ocean, and I do love strange underwater creatures (Ia! Ia! Cthulhu ftaghn!). I am so going to have to purchase this book. It helps that the title is typeset in Cholla, which is inappropriate for this publication, but a beautiful typeface nonetheless.

And that is all for now.

I am a true fiber dork.

That is, I lost my debit card and all I’m really upset about is that I also lost the little felted bag I was carrying it in.

Well, that and now I have to change all my automatic draft information. There is that.  I suppose, though, that now I have a really good excuse to buy some roving and a felting tool and felt up a new bag. To keep only change in, though. I will keep my debit card someplace more secure in the future.

Also also, I started these socks:

(The link goes where it goes mostly because if you scroll down far enough, you can see a giant bronze acorn).

I’m working on the picot edge for the top of the socks, and then will start on the pattern. I will post a photo once it’s gotten farther than 12 rows (because it’s really not very interesting yet).

Sooo…

I will be transitioning from the Blogger blog to this one (soon! I swear!), but it’ll be slow until I get the theme all fiddled with.

For the time being, here’s the news:

I finished washing and blocking the Easy Feather & Fan scarf last night, and now I have more projects started than I have ever finished, which is not all that shocking since I’ve only ever finished four projects total. I think I have six projects going concurrently. I plan on finishing two before the month is over (I hope!).

Saturday I’m going to do some cleaning and then maybe I’ll have a couple of hours to knit and possibly start a new painting.

I’ll keep a commentary, however brief.
