More SCA rambling

To start: not SCA rambling.

I’ve been making a really valiant effort to be non-messy at the moment, and I found an old baggie of catnip, which I sort of threw on the floor nonchalantly, to deal with later. When I went to “deal with it later,” one of the cats (*cough* Lemmy *cough*) was totally making out with it, and at this moment both cats are completely stoned. There is catnip all over the floor. I will deal with this later. It is far too amusing to correct.

So. So. I found some awesome videos of zari embroidery, and Leah and I have Plans to learn how to do it on Monday evening. I have loads of fabric for Rajput garb, and now I need to fancy it up. The saris are taking their usual long time to be rid of starch. There is much sewing in my future, if I want to have a kit before RUM. The other good thing, though, is that I’ve found a name plus the supporting documentation, so things are moving swimmingly.

Enough about that.

A few years back, my mother-in-law had given me the most incredible pattern book. I had very recently taken up knitting, and she’d found it at a flea market. It’s a Minerva Yarns book from the ’30s (I think; it’s not dated), and as is not the case with modern books, I want to knit every single thing in this book. The hitch is that every single thing in this book is a seriously-involved gown-type-garment, knit on worsted or smaller yarn. I am going to start stocking up on yarn and patience very soon (I imagine I’ll need a quantity of both). This is the book in question:

The blog where I found the above picture (Thrift Shop Romantic) has a really wonderful post on the book, plus some good interior scans.

No, I’m not sharing.

More yarns.

I have spun them. I am another hour’s spinning away from having them finished totally.

Actually, it’s probably more like five hours, because there are some knitting projects what need finishing before then, so I’ll finish those and then do the spinning (really, though – who am I kidding? I will spin first).

The ChickenGoddess and I had some excitement last night, after watching some of Devdas (the excitement is not related to Devdas). We went pet-sitting out in the woods (in a house in the woods; not in a clearing or anything), and on the way back under the fallen tree, I noticed that the tree was smoking, like a gigantic piece of incense. It was laying across some high-voltage lines, and had apparently dried out enough to catch on fire, and so she called the fire department, who had to call Georgia Power, and by this morning the tree had been cut into little pieces, the fire was extinguished, and all was well.

We never did finish Devdas, instead opting to watch old home movies (which was a good decision).

Oh! And I have permission to wear saris at work. I am so taking advantage of that when this rainy weather passes.

I have over-klutzed myself.

I am a giganto klutz. Usually, however, this is limited to an encounter with a doorframe here, an altercation between my knee and the edge of a coffee table there, and so on. But not usually all in one day.

Yesterday the stars were aligned just so, apparently, because I have outdone myself.

Walking down the back steps in my new sandals, I forgot they are slanted and wet and the sandals are new and I slid down about four of them. Hypochondria spoke up just then, informing me that I had broken my arm (lie) so I sat there on the step for a minute and was a Big Girl and did not cry and then went on to church and put a band-aid on the scrape on my forearm and was amazed once again at how a band-aid can make it all better. I have bumped the large and painful bruise several times since then, as I attempt to be polite by not putting my elbows on the table while eating. I have a lovely polka-dot bruise on one hip, and am contemplating dying yarn in a matching colorway.

Anyway. Then I collided with doorframes several times over the course of the afternoon, finishing off the evening by burning my thumb rather badly on the frying pan while making dinner.

Today has been uneventful. I will attempt to continue not hurting myself.

The safari was a success.

For me, at least. I had also been sent on a mission from Dawn to find some cheap and lovely saris for draping, but I came up with squat. I did, however, discover that Mirage sells fabric by the yard, so I’ve directed her to start there.

Anyhoodle.

So. We started out at Leah’s house, then went to the big Mirage, which I hadn’t been to before. I was completely overwhelmed. It’s about six times the size of the little one I usually go to, and I get overwhelmed at the little one. A very helpful store clerk followed me around, though, and through some trial and error (and one pair of disastrously ill-fitting churidaar) I managed to score a pile of loot that gets me well on the way to some really decent Rajasthani garb. I found:

the spoils of shopping by you.

3 white cotton saris with blue borders (all look to be quite sheer once I wash out the sizing)

1 Rajasthani maang-tikka

1 package lazy-people’s bindi (i.e. the sort you use if you’re not so great making a decently round dot with actual kumkum)

1 pair gigantic earrings with faux rubies and pearls (while not the stretched piercings that would be period-accurate, they pass the 10-foot rule)

1 costume ring to match the above jewelry

This is all great stuff. The maang-tikka (in the link, the gold thing at the woman’s hairline) was the most expensive, at $30, but everything else was less than $15 (per piece). I bought three of the white saris because I need a veil and a patka, and something in me kinda cringes at the thought of cutting up a sari, so one is to keep as a sari and wear as such. I mean, really – if the sari is intended to be worn unstitched, uncut, and unpeirced for various religious reasons, it seems a little wrong to cut it up, but I realize people do this all the time and the saris were cheaper than straight fabric, so I will get over it. They have little bits of blue woven in,  but those are hardly noticeable and the pallav will be perfect for the really fancy end of the patka.

The jewelry really is perfect. See?

earrings, ring, tikka by you.

Okay, so maybe it’s not exact, but it works for a first set. And it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg.

Then there was Ranee’s, which always makes me drool, but is frustrating because it is pricey. I ended up torn between a pair of khussa flats and a pair of kolhapuri sandals. I bought the sandals.

kholapuri sandals by you.

(pardon the crap image quality; the flash on my camera is still kaput)

And then we were all starving so we went to Saravana Bhavan (did I mention there were 11 of us?) and as usually happens, my eyes were considerably larger than my stomach because I got idli and sambhar PLUS a full thali for myself, and then felt sick because I ate too much, which I remedied with delicious chai. I must learn how to make this at home. QuickTea, while similarly delicious, is just not the same thing (plus it leaves sludge at the bottom of the cup if you drink it too slowly). Oh! And grocery store shopping, during which I bought some mint chutney that turned out to be way too salty, and convinced me to just make it myself later.

After stuffing ourselves (I burped sambar all afternoon, but it was so worth it) we cruised on over to KumKum Sari Center. This was the place of my most delightful find of the day, which was this sari:

$12 sari, pallav by you.

(the pallav)

$12 sari, zari detail by you.

(detail of the zari work)

Holy. Mother. Of. Steve. I found a cotton handloom sari in Atlanta. And get this – it was $12. Seriously. When I went to purchase it, the shop owner chuckled and said that she’d just put it on the sale rack because nobody wanted it. I was glad to take it off her hands. It’s beautiful and super-sheer, and likely to be very soft once I wash out all the sizing (I attempted to wrap it when I got home, but failed).

We ended our trip with Cherian’s, the giganto Indian supermarket across the street, and kulfi and laddoos at Gokul Sweets down the hill. I recommended sweets to people based on what I like, but failed at predicting their preferences. Oh, well. I liked what I chose.

Whew.

When we got home I was still very excited and ate my thali leftovers for dinner (this was when I discovered the chutney was salty, as I ate some with a pappadum), and got out all my costuming bits, and came up with this proto-Rajasthani kit (proto-kit not proto-Rajasthani):

proto-rajasthani kit by you.

Johnny Cat was skeptical:

proto-rajasthani kit, with cat by you.

but he wears neither clothes nor jewelry, so I do not take his opinion very seriously.

I am still missing some necklaces, a tassel for my braid, the pearls for either side of the maang-tikka, a second anklet, armbands, and a way to make the pattern on the ghagra, but this is a good start. I am still wearing the bindi and bangles. I feel pretty.

LIE.

I so totally (lie) have mono (lie). I am going to die (lie lie lie).

I will be sick forever (oh, hypochondria, you LIE).

(Truth is that I have a cold and am so excited about tomorrow’s shopping outing I could spit. We ate leftovers so we could save money for more chaat.)

I am a happier goth.

For a while I was a not-so-Happy-Goth. But I am better.

So.

I have made yarns. I have made yarns! I am quite happy to have made yarns. I worked on my crap but natural yarn with the new spindle some last week, and the lovely (but blogless) Leah informed me that I was Doing It Wrong, but then proceeded to show the how to Do It Right. Who knew you had to UN-twist the draft a bit before you let it spin up? And that doing so prevented you from yanking on the roving and cursing in frustration? Well, me. That’s who. But not anymore! I am well on my way to being a spinning fiend. Or something. I am, in all likelihood, overspinning the yarn, but I will find that out later, when I attempt to ply it. At the rate I’m going that should be soon.

And my thumb is a little blue from the roving. I’m kinda proud of that.

And work bought us lunch today! I ate way too much cheese dip (who doesn’t, though?).

And, and tomorrow’s Friday.

Woot.
