Turkey

Is what I am. I’ve been busy, and I will elaborate later, but for now (and because i love Thriller), I’m clogging up the internets.

And then

and also

Yesterday I consumed various sorts of meats, wines, casseroles, salads, souffles, breads, and pastries.

7 pounds in all.

Today, I woke up famished.

(I will probably overeat again at lunch. Hooray for the holidays, and for having a rowing machine at home!)

Photos will come later, after I steal borrow them from Naugle.

Why I knit, #15

Because it’s friggin’ cold outside. And damn – hand-knitted socks sure are cozy. (And I previously rationalized this to myself by saying that I’m knitting because I’m cheap, only then I thought about how much I actually spend on yarn for the projects I knit, and it’s not that much cheaper! If at all! So I am really just knitting because it’s a fun thing to do, and because I feel pretty special when I tell people I made my socks myself)

And then also, because I played video games last night instead of being truly productive, here is a meme I created myself:

Ten random things

1. Magazines subscribed to – Cabinet, GOOD

2. Aside from knitting, my favorite pasttimes are – reading, painting, and writing

3. If I were not a designer (insert your own profession in place of designer), I would be – a cosmologist, provided someone could teach me the computational part first

4. I am irrationally worried about – flesh-eating bacteria

5. If I were the opposite sex – I’d still have long hair

6. The thing I miss most about childhood is – the ability to play-act un-selfconsciously

7. I like to collect – old books, vinyl figurines, old candid photographs (like from the turn of the century, and not portraits) and well-designed clothing tags

8. Though I’ve never been there, I feel inexplicably homesick for – India

9. I’ve never really liked to eat – peanuts (ew)

10. When I have nightmares, they’re usually about – zombies

Woohoo! Go at it.

So far, so good.

Today, she has been a good day. Number the first, I went to the dentist, who informed me that all my fillings are intact and my teeth look healthy! I haven’t heard that since 2000. It was a nice surprise. And although I’d like to save money and hold out on dental-type things, I now can get that dental guard that helps me not crack my fillings, since I don’t actually have to get them this time.

Then lunch came, and I created another knitter with the help of the lovely Nell. Julie will be great! She chose some soft blue-green yarn that will make a beautiful first scarf.

And then, Belly still had some fresh everything bagels, which are like heaven (if heaven were a bagel), with roasted garlic baked into the dough. I devoured one for lunch, and have half a great cup of coffee left, plus a giant jelly bean (only I just ate it, while writing this; it was delicious).

Upon arrival back at the office, I discovered that the pound of undyed roving I ordered from etsy had arrived (hooray!), and now it’s a pretty quiet afternoon, and I think we’re going comics-shopping this evening. Tomorrow I plan on sleeping in quite late. It will be excellent.

Happy Friday!

[My gift to you is the knowledge that a new Watchmen trailer has been released. Hoo, boy. I’m so excited I can hardly stand it.]

I got my posters!

See?

They’re even better in person. And they smell good (kind of like scotch tape, or maybe that’s what fresh silk screen smells like, but either way, I love it)!

I’m in love.

(Plus, the money I spent goes to a very good cause. Hooray!)

Handspun

But closer. Baobh, you’re a lovely person (and this is lovely yarn).

I almost can’t knit socks with it. Almost.

Woo, loot.

Wherein I am no longer one score and six, and also wherein I use vowels lots and not variously.

Anyway. This past weekend’s radio silence was due to the fact that I was forcibly not doing anything except fun things, because of my birthday. I have no excuse for Friday, other than teaching folks to knit. Allison has proven to be quite the knitter since then, having ripped and reknit her scarf FIVE TIMES (madness, I say – I never ripped anything when I was learning, and it shows in the pieces I “lovingly” gifted to friends).

But I digress. I did many things on Saturday, The Big Day, but none of which were actually productive. My husband made me feel very special, though. We went for a walk to get lunch at Soul Vegetarian, which has the most amazing non-cheese mac and cheese (truly, it is more amazing than real mac and cheese), then stopped by the Hammonds House to look around, then took a nap, and then went to buy knitter’s gadgets (a swift! and a ball winder!) and ice cream sundaes. Afterward, while killing time until meeting the Chickengoddess and Consort (husband, actually, but in fancy stories goddesses only ever have consorts) we purchased art supplies and some hair product from the surliest Sally’s employee ever (the first of many surly folks we’d encounter in retail experiences before the weekend was out). Do you hear me, surly Sally’s employee? Never mind. You’re too surly to read blogs. I can tell. The evening culminated in drunken gluttony at Haru Ichiban, where I forgot that I do not, in fact, need the full meal plus three appetizers, no matter how tasty they may seem. And also, sake makes us see in different colors.

I got loot! From Dawn, a coveted Gahan exclusive, the cat matchbox:

Cat Matchbox by you.

And from my parents, all the sock needles in the entire world (seriously – I can now knit 16 pairs of socks simultaneously). The husband, in addition to the yarn tools, gifted me some donuts and my very own Blastech DL-44 heavy pistol (for those of you who are not uber-geeks, that’s Han Solo’s laser gun, and mine even makes the noise!). The lovely Baobh spun me some awesome sock yarn, that is retina-searingly bright, but beautiful and soft. I both want to knit with it desperately, and also want to keep it in the hanks and pet it surreptitiously while nobody’s looking. Perhaps I can do both. Here is the loot:

Birthday Loot, Round 1 by you.

Sunday was church, then shopping with birthday money (I bought a tagine pot!), then more fraternizing with the Chickengoddess, and the amazing husband bought me an ice cream cake and we sang and everything.

The older I get, the less I care that my birthday is in November, so I can’t have an outdoor pool party. Sake trumps chlorine and soggy Cheetos any day.

Mwahahahaha

I have created more knitters. Today, it was Ashley and the blogless Allison. They have purchased yarn and needles (on a lunchtime foray to Knitch; thanks, Kim et al), and knitting commences tomorrow.

*snif* I’m so proud!

Real PSA

Well, sort of. This is something I’ve been proud to follow and work with for a while (in a small, tangential sense):

I get so emotional watching this video. It completely blows me away, thinking about what these kids, who are so young by the world’s standards, have already done for their communities and for the world community as a whole. (hey! go visit the Three Dot Dash website!)

I think the world needs many, many more people like these kids.

Just because you can

Doesn’t mean you should.

Really, folks. I’m all for creativity, but this is a little too much.
